June 26 is International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. On June 12, 1987, the United Nations held a ministerial meeting about the problem of drug abuse and illicit trafficking in Vienna, and proposed the slogan "love life, not drugs". More than 3000 delegates from 138 countries agreed to designate June 26 as " International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking ", in order to attract the worldwide attention to the problem of drugs.

According to the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China(中华人民共和国刑法), drugs refer to opium, heroin, methamphetamine, morphine, marijuana, cocaine, and other narcotic drugs and psychotropic drugs that can make people addicted.



The Harm of Drugs

1.Drugs seriously endanger people's physical and mental health;

2. The drug problem induces other illegal crimes and destroys the normal social order;

3. The drug problem permeates and corrupt the political institutions, exacerbating corruption;

4. The drug problem has caused huge economic losses to the society.


Relevant Laws

1.Drugs abuse is illegal

Those who take or inject drugs shall be detained for more than 10 days but less than 15 days, and may also be fined less than 2,000 yuan. 

2.Drugs cultivation must be punished.

(1) Whoever illegally cultivates opium poppy with less than 500 plants drugs shall be detained for more than 10 days and less than 15 days, and may also be fined less than 3,000 yuan.

(2) Planting more than 500 poppy plants but less than 3,000 poppy plants or a large number of other original narcotic plants. Those who plant it after being dealt with by the public security organs and resist its eradication shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than five years, criminal detention or public surveillance, and shall also be fined.

3.Drugs trafficking is severely punished

Whoever smuggles, sells, transports or manufactures drugs, regardless of the quantity, shall be investigated for criminal responsibility and given criminal punishment. Whoever smuggles, transports, sells or manufactures more than one kilogram of opium, more than 50 grams of heroin or methamphetamine, or a large amount of other drugs shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of 15 years, life imprisonment or death, and his property shall also be confiscated.
